Built in layers

The layer you never see.

A lasting tile installation begins before the finish goes on. Here is how to think about the work beneath the surface.

Preparation to finish

Each layer has
a purpose.

The exact assembly depends on the room, product and existing conditions. The principle stays the same: resolve what supports and protects the tile before you cover it.

01

Start with a plan

Bring the room dimensions, photos and material ideas. Review access, the parts of the room staying in place and any work by other trades. Set the scope before choosing a start date.

02

Prepare the base

Removal exposes the existing condition. Review damage, flatness and the appropriate backing before setting tile. The new finish should not conceal a problem that needs attention.

03

Resolve the wet-area assembly

In a shower, the pan, walls, drain and penetrations must form a compatible system. Discuss the products, connection details and required testing. Photographs before covering provide a useful record.

04

Make the layout deliberate

Check the pattern against niches, fixtures, corners and the room’s main sightlines. Consider grout color, exposed edges and transitions before committing the first pieces.

05

Finish and walk through

The joints, profiles and transitions complete the installation. Review care instructions, curing or startup requirements and any remaining work by other trades before putting the room back into use.
